Steve Smith Sr.'s first press conference of 2016 was all over the place

Baltimore Ravens wideout Steve Smith Sr. is back on the field after rupturing his Achilles last year, and his first press conference pretty much ran the gamut of emotions.

He was nearly in tears when talking about letting down his teammates when he got injured:

“I really came back not to set any records, but more because this orginization gave me an opportunity. And when I got hurt, I felt like I let those guys down in the locker room. So for me to come back and play, it’s to show them that I am dependable.”

Then he got fiery about what he’s going to do to the opposition:

“If you’re not in the same jersey as me, I plan on ripping you to shreds. … This is competition, this is football. In competition, guys are hitting you. So I’m going to hit back.”

There was also anger directed at the media. Via NFL.com:

“[I’ll] show you jack[expletives] that at 37 years old, I can still play. And I’m sick of ya’ll telling how can you depend on a 37-year-old to play this game after a ruptured Achilles’.”

Finally, he was grateful:

“I rehabbed for nine months. While y’all sitting around twiddling your thumbs I was sitting there four or five days a week for nine months trying to rehab to get back on the field. I intend to lay everything out, not for myself, but for the people who believed in me, the people that invested in me 10 years ago, the people that thought that I would only be there for a minute. So this is just a chance for me to say thank you to them, (to) finish what an organization allowed me to start.”

Welcome back.

Thanks to advances in AI, smartphones are revolutionizing care for the visually impaired, providing everything from diagnoses to “sight.”

“Seven hundred years after glasses were invented there are still 2.5 billion people in the world with poor vision and no access to vision correction,” says Hong Kong philanthropist James Chen. Chairman of his family’s Nigeria-based manufacturing company, Wahum Group, Chen is funding a contest called the Clearly Vision Prize that will award a total of $250,000 to projects that improve eyesight, especially in poor countries. Twelve semifinalists were announced this week (the five winners will be awarded September 15). Among the contenders: 3D printed eyeglass frames, drones that deliver medical supplies, and several smartphone-based technologies. Some of the smartphones help nonexperts test vision, and one uses artificial intelligence to “see” for blind people.

This Rare Deep Sea Jellyfish Is All Of Your Underwater Nightmares Rolled Into One

If there is one species that Earth’s oceans are abundant with, it’s jellyfish. Thanks to climate change and the general warming of the planet, our oceans are becoming a much more hospitable place for all sorts of jellyfish. However, there will always be those more mysterious and elusive sub-species. Consider the stygiomedusa gigantea. It is a species of giant jellyfish that is among the rarest in the world. Over the past 110 years, there have only been 115 sightings. According to those who have studied it, stygiomedusa gigantea is one of the largest invertebrate predators in the world.

These Boys Adopted An Orphaned Baby Owl, and Maybe You Should Too

REM1602ND16

One summer day, my husband came home to our western Minnesota farm with a little fur ball the size of an apple. It was a baby owl. My two young sons, Charles and Clem, and I immediately fell in love. We named the owl Rosco Lonnie.

We wanted to do our best to take care of him. I was worried because he wouldn’t eat. Finally, I thought, What do I like to eat when nothing else tastes good? Bread and warm milk. So I put a little in a teaspoon, and he happily ate it. This new diet let him know we loved him and wanted to help.

window.MB_VIDEO_POSITION = “inread”;
window.MB_PAUSE_AFTER_AD = 0;
(function(){ var sc = document.createElement(‘script’);
sc.src = ‘http://player.mediabong.net/se/1125.js?url=’+encodeURIComponent(document.location.href);
sc.type = ‘text/javascript’;
sc.async = true;
var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(sc, s);
})();

Our back porch became the little fur ball’s home. We kept his food there, and that’s where he learned to fly. He flapped his wings and went from one step to the next. Little by little, he flew farther and farther, but he always came back to us.

Rosco was very fussy with whom he let hold him. He liked me, my mother, and his favorite, Charles. He didn’t like Clem too much, because he would squeeze Rosco too hard.

People didn’t believe that he would come to me when I called for him. One morning, Paul, the man we were working for, wanted to show Rosco off to some friends. So I called for Rosco and opened the front door, and he came flying in and skidded across the linoleum floor in the living room. We were so proud!

After having so much fun that summer, we had to move and could not take Rosco with us. We shed many tears for our family owl. But anytime I look at this picture, I’m reminded of the many happy memories we had with our beloved Rosco Lonnie.
