Store Safely this Summer

Here’s our 5-point checklist to make sure your out of season belongings stay protected year round.

As the weather starts to noticeably heat up, we’re transitioning from our winter wardrobes and finally putting away those heavy jackets that we’ve been hanging on to – just in case! But now that the end of May is approaching, the sun is shining and we’re finally ready to embrace our summer skin. Time to ditch the long pants and woolly warmers until next Winter! But before we get started, here are a few things to keep in mind when hiding away your cold weather gear for the summer months.

  1. De-Clutter! Don’t bother storing old or tatty clothes for a whole season, only to throw them away when you re-stock your wardrobe later in the year. Use the change of seasons to de-clutter and get rid of anything that’s you know you won’t put to good use.
  2. Store Securely. Choose your containers wisely: Most of us don’t have endless wardrobe space to hang all our out of season items up, so it’s a smart idea to fold up what you can and pack it away. It’s best to use airtight plastic containers over cardboard to reduce the risk of damaging humidity or use compactable, resealable vacuum bags to save space.
  3. Keep It Cool: Store containers in a well-ventilated, cool spot. Somewhere dark and dry is ideal as sunlight will fade material and warm spaces will encourage humidity and moisture build up on your clothes.
  4. Suck It Up: Add a single Moisture Grabbers pouch to each container to protect your belongings from any humidity that builds up in your boxes. Taking the above steps are a great way to reduce the risk of damage being caused, however should any excess moisture seep in, the water-attracting technology in these pouches will keep your clothing fresh. Excess moisture is a haven for insects and bugs, so make sure that you keep those critters out.
  5. Check in! We know you’re not thinking of winter knits while you’re sipping that summer margarita, but it’s no harm to take a peek at your storage containers once in awhile. Do a quick check for possible cracks, leaks and any feasting bugs. If anything, looks at your giant parka will make you appreciate the sunshine even more!

These same 5 tips can also be used for general storage, such as document boxes, files or even old photographs. Keep your stuff safe and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more home-owner tips and tricks.

  1. I am curious to find out what blog system you have been using? I’m experiencing some minor security issues with my latest website and I’d like to find something more safe. Do you have any suggestions?
